How to Select the Best Hedge Funds

How can a hedge fund marketer or third party marketer identify the "best hedge funds?" This is an important question as the clients you select will make or break your success as a marketing agent. A great manager with high ethical standards, steady performance, great team and institutional investment process and literally make your job twice as enjoyable and half as stressful as representing a one man show hedge fund with no track record, no assets and no team.

This is not to say that there are not some very talented traders and small hedge funds, it is just that most investors see dozens if not hundreds of hedge fund managers a year and they learn to be very pick on who they will seriously consider, this is exactly why you must do this as well. To find the best hedge funds I would suggest a few ideas here:

• Cast a wide net - consider many sources of manager leads
  
• Use hedge fund databases to screen and conduct research on clients
• Advertise - sometimes great managers have a hard time connecting with great marketers - find a place such as a magazine, website, blog or conference where you can advertise your firm or services
• Speak - If you speak at marketing and capital raising conference you will probably gain a few leads from managers while also casting yourself in an expert light and improving your reputation in the industry. This can help improve the quality and quantity of your manager flow.
  
• Develop a Client Requirement Matrix - Develop a set of criteria that you look for in managers, some points may be negotiable while others you may be more flexible on. It is important not to get caught up in the excitement of a retainer or new client opportunity and loose site of lessons you have learned in the past about who to work with

• Ask for Referrals - From investors, consultants and service providers
